Sports Vision
What is sports vision?
To stay competitive on the playing field you need peak performance from your entire body and your eyes are no exception. Sports vision is "full-scope" primary eye care that can help you optimize these three key visual skills:
- Contrast Sensitivity lets you see fine details from a distance like the subtle contours of a golf course.
- Dynamic Visual Acuity keeps your vision as clear when you're running as when you're standing, so you can see every obstacle.
- Focus Flexibility keeps a ball in sharp focus as it moves toward or away from you.
Dr. Johnson which visual skills do I need for different sports I like to play?
Every sport poses unique challenges: glare, wind, haze, and close encounters with moving objects. Every sport has unique demands: for depth perception, peripheral vision, eye-hand coordination.
Dr. Johnson can contact lenses help?
Contact lenses are an athlete's dream. Contact lenses can increase peripheral vision. You can easily wear appropriate protective eyewear over them such as goggles or sunglasses. And you can quit worrying about broken frames or lenses. Plus, contact lenses don't fog up, slide down, or fall off.
Dr. Johnson what kind of contact lenses should I try?
Most athletes say that disposable contact lenses are the way to go. You can replace them daily, bi-weekly, or monthly whichever schedule is recommended by your eye doctor. Disposable contacts are more comfortable with less maintenance.
Dr. Johnson I wondered if there are sports lenses made for certain sports?
Yes there are and they are tinted like polarized sunglasses in amber and gray green depending on the sport as to which lens color would work best. They are also disposable contacts. They eliminate image distortion and improve field of vision.
Dr. Johnson I really like to play sports and I really like getting out on sunny days what should I wear to protect my eyes?
Sunny days, sports and outdoors all go together. UV rays on sunny and cloudy days can be harmful to your eyes. A good solution would be polycarbonate polarized sports sun goggles that block harmful UV rays and dangerous projectiles like rocks, balls etc.
Dr. Johnson I play a lot of sports: are there certain frame and lens materials that work better for high activity sports?
Of course there are. Some of the best sports glasses are made with zyl plastic materials, graphite, titanium in both prescription and non prescription sports frames.
Dr. Johnson what lenses would you recommend in my sports frames?
We are an authorized prescription sunglass and sports glasses dealer for Oakley as well as Maui Jim. We carry other sports frames and can make any lens type and prescription to fit a number of frame styles. Different lens materials that are impact resistant and visually enhanced would be plutonite lenses, polarized and anti glare lenses and different colors of mirror coatings which can be chosen and customized based on your desired appearance.
