Prescription Medications

Dr. Johnson why do you need to know if I am taking any medications for my eye exam?

Steroids and certain medications that can treat various health problems can cause cataracts, glaucoma and damage the inside of your eye health in the retina. Diuretics, blood thinners and even aspirin taken on a regular basis can cause bleeding in the back of the eye or the front of the eye. We always want to know this so we can consult with the doctor that has prescribed these for you. Many women take hormones which affect their tear film and cause dry eyes. This can sometimes make it very difficult for you to wear contact lenses without your eye doctor’s help in prescribing tear drops or certain contact lens materials to help reduce the eye dryness issue. These are just a few reasons why we need to know what prescription medicines you might be taking or even allergic to.

Dr. Johnson why do you need to know what prescription medications I am allergic to?

I am licensed to treat eye infections and glaucoma. In prescribing any oral medications and prescription topical medications, I need to know if there are any medications that you may be allergic to because they could be in the medications I would prescribe for eye infections or diseases. This prevents allergic reactions for you with any medications that I may choose to take the best care of you.
